CS2 Well Worn Float Range Explained: Real Limits 0.38: 0.45 in 2025

Most players searching for the well worn float range expect a simple answer such as "around 0.40." The proper range is broader: Well-Worn covers float values from 0.38 to 0.45. A 0.3800 skin is technically Well-Worn, while a 0.4499 skin is also Well-Worn, but those two items can look noticeably different in-game.


That distinction matters if you flip skins. The wear label is only a category. The actual float value, pattern, finish, and model determine what you are buying.

The complete CS2 wear scale

The standard CS2 float categories are:

* Factory New: 0.00 to 0.07


* Minimal Wear: 0.07 to 0.15


* Field-Tested: 0.15 to 0.38


* Well-Worn: 0.38 to 0.45


* Battle-Scarred: 0.45 to 1.00

The boundary numbers can appear slightly differently depending on rounding. A listing shown as 0.38 may actually be just under or just over the exact cutoff, so I always check the full float rather than trusting a shortened marketplace display.

Float values normally run from 0.00 to 1.00, but not every skin can use the entire scale. Each finish has its own minimum and maximum possible float. For example, the AWP Asiimov generally starts around 0.18, which means you will not find it in Factory New or Minimal Wear. Its popular versions are Field-Tested, Well-Worn, and Battle-Scarred.

Why 0.38 and 0.45 are not equal in appearance

Wear is not applied as a perfectly uniform layer across every part of a weapon. The finish defines which areas become scratched, darkened, faded, or discolored. A Well-Worn AK-47 Redline can still have a strong black and red appearance, while a heavily worn finish with light-colored artwork may look much rougher at the same float.

There are also skins where the difference between 0.38 and 0.45 is easy to see. On an M4A4 Asiimov, the orange and white sections can lose a lot of visual cleanliness as the float rises. On a Glock-18 Water Elemental, the artwork may become visibly scuffed, especially around the slide. On the other hand, some darker finishes hide wear better, making a high Well-Worn float look acceptable from normal playing distance.

This is why I do not call every Well-Worn skin bad. I judge the actual model in inspect view, then compare the price against a similar Field-Tested version.

The economics of a Well-Worn purchase

Well-Worn usually trades at a discount to Field-Tested, but the discount is not fixed. For a common case skin, the gap may be only a few cents. For a popular rifle or knife, the difference can be substantial.

As a rough example, a Field-Tested AWP Asiimov might sell for noticeably more than a Well-Worn one, while a Battle-Scarred copy can drop further because the black scope and orange body show more damage. The exact price depends on current supply, stickers, StatTrak status, pattern, and whether the item is listed on Steam or an external market. I treat any price ballpark as temporary, not as a guaranteed valuation.

A Well-Worn skin becomes interesting when the visual difference from Field-Tested is small but the price difference is large. This often happens near the low end of the category, around 0.38 to 0.40. It can also happen with finishes that hide scratches well. I have bought low-float Well-Worn rifles for players who wanted the design but did not care about paying for a cleaner wear tier.

The reverse is also true. A Well-Worn item at 0.449 may be priced as if it were an average Well-Worn copy, even though it is close to Battle-Scarred. If the finish shows damage clearly, I usually skip it unless the discount is meaningful.

Float distribution is not the same as visual quality

A common mistake is assuming that every float value is equally likely. Float generation and item availability depend on the skin's permitted range, the cases or collections that produced it, and how many existing items are being resold. A case such as Dreams & Nightmares does not create an equal number of every possible float across every finish.

When I estimate whether a low Well-Worn copy is worth chasing, I start with the available listings and update my expectation from the evidence in front of me. That is a practical use of Bayesian probability: an initial assumption changes after checking the skin's float limits, current supply, and observed listings. It does not predict the next drop, but it helps prevent the lazy assumption that "0.40 must be average" for every item.

For flipping, I also compare the number of listings at 0.38 to 0.45. If there are many copies clustered near 0.39, a seller may have trouble charging extra for a low Well-Worn float. If only a few copies exist and the finish looks clean, the float can help the item stand out.

Well-Worn and trade-ups

Float matters even more in trade-ups. The output float is calculated from the input floats and the collection rules, rather than simply choosing a random wear label. Putting low-float Field-Tested inputs into a contract can produce a better output float than using high-float inputs, even if both sets display the same wear category.

This is where people often overpay for ordinary Well-Worn inputs. A cheap 0.38 skin may be useful for a particular contract, but only if the output range and collection odds justify the purchase. I calculate the expected result before buying ten inputs. The name of the wear tier alone tells me very little about the contract's value.

I use this quick process before buying:

* Check the exact float, not just the Well-Worn label.


* Inspect the weapon in-game, including the rear, magazine, handle, and scope.


* Compare the same finish at 0.38, 0.41, and 0.45 if possible.


* Check whether stickers, charms, or StatTrak add real value.


* Compare the price with Field-Tested and Battle-Scarred copies.


* Avoid paying a premium unless the appearance actually supports it.

The most useful rule is simple: buy the skin's appearance, not the category name. Well-Worn means 0.38 to 0.45, but that number is only the starting point. The finish, model, supply, and market price decide whether a particular Well-Worn copy is a bargain or just a damaged skin with a convenient label.
